- About This Course​
This course is for shippers and freight forwarders with responsibilities that include preparing dangerous goods/hazmat consignments intended for air transport.
Successful completion will provide initial certification to enable you to apply the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR) to consignments of dangerous goods/hazmat shipped by air.
This course will provide you with the knowledge to interpret the IATA DGR, using the experience you will gain to apply the requirements to consignments of dangerous goods and hazardous materials being sent by air transport.
The contents of the IATA DGR relating to the preparation of dangerous goods/hazmat shipments are covered. These include:
- Legislation, to give you an understanding of the legal aspects and responsibilities of shipper, agents, and airlines
- Applicability of the IATA DGR
- Limitations imposed on cargo and baggage, and by states and operators
- Classification of dangerous substances and articles
- Identification and the use of proper shipping names
- Packing
- Marking and labelling
- Documentation
- U.S. 49 CFR requirements for domestic and international air freight shipments
- Radioactive materials
This course is designed for personnel who have either no previous dangerous goods/hazmat compliance training, or who have let their accreditation lapse. The course fulfills ICAO, IATA and 49 CFR training requirements.
Successful completion will qualify you to prepare dangerous goods/hazmat consignments for carriage by air for two years.
To maintain the currency of your accreditation you can renew your qualification in the 3 months before its expiration by completing relevant refresher training.

Course format
This course is intended to be self-paced, so that you can complete it at times that are convenient for you. It should take about ten hours to complete (varies by student).
Your performance will be based on an assessment at the end of the training course. This assessment will properly and fairly measure your competency against industry-defined benchmarks. Results, in the form of ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’ are provided under a competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) system.

Requirements
To complete this course access to the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) is required while you are undertaking the learning and assessments parts of the course.
Current editions of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual are available for purchase from DG Air Training Centre. Limited access and full publications are available.

- The seven-day and thirty-day versions are for students that only require the publication to complete the course
- The full-access version is for complete access to the publication for the year. Students will purchase this publication to be used throughout the year in their day-to-day work
